Two Buoys Bistro – A Mediterranean restaurant with vegan and vegetarian choices

Veggy Malta went to Two Buoys Bistro in St Julians. Whilst Two Buoys Bistro define themselves as a Mediterranean restaurant, they do have an interesting vegan and vegetarian menu.

The starter was vine leaves stuffed with bulgur wheat and roasted veg topped with tomato sauce and crispy polenta.  All the vegetables used are fresh. That includes the butternut squash, carrots, parsnips and celeriac, which were all part of the dish. Apart from tasting good, the bulgur wheat is a good source of plant-based protein and minerals. The plate is decorated with olive ash and pistachios.

I took the vegetarian option which has honey drizzled over the vine leaves. But there is a vegan option without the honey. The cost of this plate is €12.95 (as Main) and €10.95 (as starter).

The main course: Crispy tofu curry with rice and stir fry vegetables

As a main course I took the Crispy tofu curry with rice and stir fry vegetables.  I started off with the crispy kale and went down to the steam fried rice. The curry sauce on the rice is vegan as well, made from shallots, lime leaves and lemon grass, yellow curry paste and coconut paste. Black pepper and curcuma are mixed with the sauce to add flavour (along with the health benefits of these two combined). Under the rice one finds the stir fried vegetables. A mix of baby corn, snow peas, shallots, mushrooms and shredded carrots. A very balanced mix of vegetables that blends well with the curry and the tofu. The tofu is fried and then coated with semolina. This gives an added taste to the tofu.

One can find and taste the occasional black sesame seeds and the odd nuts that give this plate an odd surprise. The curry is tasty but not hot (this is a Mediterranean restaurant not an Indian restaurant). The price of this plate is €8.95.

Finally there was the dessert, which was a raw vegan and gluten free cake. Whilst all the meal was delicious, this was the best part. The crust is rich with raw cacao and nuts whilst the inside is made from coconut oil, nuts surrounded by blend of home-made rose-berry sauce. Furthermore black sesame seeds and pistachios are sprinkled on the cake. The cake is naturally sweet using dates to give it sweetness (and not sugar). The cost of this dessert is €5.50?

More about Two Buoys Bistro

The restaurant always has 4 or 5 vegetarian/vegan dishes on any day.  They are cooked separately from the other plates and use coconut oil. Therefore if you are interested in a vegetarian restaurant in Malta, Two Buoys Bistro offers a choice for both vegetarians and vegans. I was pleased to speak to Michelle the co-owner of the restaurant about the dishes whilst overlooking the Spinola Bay who mentioned that under the restaurant there also is an art studio.

You can find Two Buoys Bistro on this map here. You can enter from the Spinola road entrance or the waterfront entrance. Alternatively check our their facebook page or their website.
